The Spring Session Style Guide: What to Wear for Your Photoshoot | West TN Photographer

Here is my simple guide to looking effortless, comfortable, and timeless in your spring portraits.

1. Think "Coordinated," Not "Matchy-Matchy"

The days of everyone wearing white shirts and khaki pants are long gone. The goal is to look like you belong together without looking like a uniform.

  • The Strategy: Pick a color palette with 3–4 colors. Start with one patterned piece (like a floral dress or a plaid shirt) and pull your other outfits from the colors within that pattern.

  • The Mix: If one person is wearing a print, keep everyone else in solids. It balances the visual weight of the photo.

2. Embrace Spring Textures

Spring is about movement and softness. Avoid stiff, heavy fabrics like thick wool or super heavy denim. Instead, lean into:

  • Light Knits: A soft, chunky cardigan or a thin sweater.

  • Flowy Fabrics: Linen, cotton blends, or light silk/satin.

  • Layers: Denim jackets, blazers, or light scarves. These add depth to your photos and give you something to do with your hands.

3. Color Palette Inspiration

When the world turns green, you want to make sure you pop against the background without clashing.

  • Soft Pastels: Blush pink, sage green, dusty blue, and lavender. These feel classic and airy.

  • Earthy Neutrals: If you prefer a more "moody" or grounded look, try warm beiges, terracottas, or soft creams.

  • The Pop: Don't be afraid of a bold color, but keep it to one person. A mustard yellow or deep navy blue can look incredible against a lush garden backdrop.

4. Footwear Matters (Really!)

I know, I know—it's tempting to wear those cute heels. But remember, we might be walking through tall grass, sandy paths, or uneven terrain.

  • Pro Tip: Wear shoes that you can actually walk in. If you must have the heels, bring them in a bag and wear comfy boots or sneakers for the hike to our spot. Your feet (and your facial expressions) will thank you.

5. Comfort is Queen

If you feel restricted, itchy, or like you’re constantly tugging at your hemline, it will show in the photos. If you feel like a million bucks, you’ll carry yourself with confidence, and that is the secret sauce to a great image.

The Golden Rule: If you’re uncomfortable, change it. I’d rather you be in an outfit you love that fits your personality than a "perfect" outfit that makes you feel self-conscious.

Still feeling stuck?

I’ve got you covered. When we book your session, I’m happy to look over a few options or send over some mood boards to help you narrow down your choices. Let’s make your session as stress-free as it is beautiful.
