👧🏾🧒🏼How to Get Kids to Cooperate during a Photoshoot
Real smiles. Less stress. Happy memories.
Let’s be real — kids don’t always love standing still and smiling on command. And you know what? That’s okay! As a family photographer in West Tennessee, I’ve worked with all kinds of personalities — from the shy and quiet to the wild and giggly — and I’ve learned that the best photos happen when we let kids be themselves.
Here are a few of my go-to tips to help your children stay happy, relaxed, and cooperative during your family session:
Talk About the Session Ahead of Time
Kids do best when they know what to expect. Let them know this is going to be a fun time where they get to play, explore, and maybe even be a little silly! You can say something like: “We’re going to take some special pictures together. There might be tickles, games, and lots of fun!”
Choose the Right Time
Try to schedule your session around your child’s happiest time of day — usually after a nap and a snack. Well-rested, fed kids are much more likely to cooperate and enjoy the experience.
Let Them Be Themselves
Don’t stress about getting that one “perfect” posed photo. I’ll guide your family into gentle prompts and playful moments that bring out natural smiles. If your little one wants to run, twirl, or show off a toy — we’ll go with it. Sometimes the in-between moments become the most magical ones.
Bring Snacks & Small Rewards
Pack a few mess-free treats or a small favorite toy as a little motivator. Think mini marshmallows, fruit snacks, or stickers. Just avoid anything that stains or melts (like chocolate — trust me on that one!).
Stay Positive & Go With the Flow
Kids feed off your energy. If you’re relaxed and having fun, they will be too! If they need a moment to reset, we’ll take a break. No pressure, no judgment — just capturing your family’s unique connection.
Bonus Tip: Trust Your Photographer 😉
With years of experience capturing kids of all ages, I’ve got a few tricks up my sleeve — from silly games to prompts that get real smiles. So breathe easy, mama — I’ve got this.
